In his controversial book "The Trouble with Physics: The Rise of String Theory, the Fall of a Science, and What Comes Next", theoretical physicist Lee Smolin points out "five great problems in theoretical physics." 2 days ago  String theory, often called the “theory of everything,” is a relatively young science that includes such unusual concepts as superstrings, branes, and extra dimensions. Scientists are hopeful that string theory will unlock one of the biggest mysteries of the universe, namely how gravity and quantum physics fit ://

The two volumes that comprise String Theory provide an up-to-date, comprehensive account of string theory. Volume 1 provides a thorough introduction to the bosonic string, based on the Polyakov path integral and conformal field theory. The first four chapters introduce the central ideas of string theory, the tools of conformal field theory, the Polyakov path integral, and the covariant ?id=54DGYyNAjacC.   An instant classic of American sportswriting—the tennis essays of David Foster Wallace, “the best mind of his generation” (A. Lastly, we’ve got the Lectures on String Theory by D Lust and S Theisen. This is the book by Dieter Lust and Stefan Theisen, which I included partly for sentimental reasons because it is, in fact, the book from which I learned string theory.

But it’s also a great :// “String theory is an attempt at a deeper description of nature by thinking of an elementary particle not as a little point but as a little loop of vibrating string.” ― Edward Witten 9 likes   The first four chapters introduce the central ideas of string theory, the tools of conformal field theory, the Polyakov path integral, and the covariant quantization of the string.

The book then treats string interactions: the general formalism, and detailed treatments of the tree level and one loop ://   This book guides the reader from the basics of string theory to recent developments.

It introduces the basics of perturbative string theory, world-sheet supersymmetry, space-time supersymmetry, conformal field theory and the heterotic string, before describing modern developments, including D-branes, string dualities and :// The book is consistent with the objective set out, well written for graduate students and probably one of the best textbooks on the market about string theory and shall remain so for a long time.

• J. Polchinski, String Theory This two volume work is the standard introduction to the subject. Our lectures will more or less follow the path laid down in volume one covering the bosonic string.

Polchinski's book on string theory is a very well written book about the subject. Also, the problems given in the book are valuable for a further understanding.

String theory has been called the “theory of everything.” It seeks to describe all the fundamental forces of nature.

It encompasses gravity and quantum mechanics in one unifying ://  The BBS-book somehow I don't really like that much; too often I get the feeling that without a background in String Theory the book is hard to follow.

I expected more from that book. But maybe I should give it another try. I guess the real successor of GSW still has to come.
